Department overview

The Department of Genetics, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University was founded in 1950. In 1978, it was approved as a master's degree awarding point. In 2001, it was added as a doctoral degree. The genetics discipline is now a key discipline in Shandong Province, a key laboratory for genetic diseases in Shandong Province, and a major component of the Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministy of Education, China. There are 13 teachers in the department, including 3 professors, 8 associate professors and 2 lecturers. There are 1 special professor of Changjiang Scholars, 1 young scholar of Qilu of Shandong University, and 4 Future scholar program of Shandong University. The Department of Genetics has trained 28 doctors in genetics, 48 masters, and 56 current graduate students.

Scientific research

The department mainly focuses on the molecular mechanism and prevention of genetic diseases, and has undertaken the WHO, National 863 Program, 973 Project, China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, National Natural Science Foundation Key Project and many provincial studies. The department identified and isolated a number of disease-causing genes and published papers in well-known journals such as Cell, Nature Genetics, American Journal of Human Genetics, Cancer cell, Journal of Cell Biology, Human molecular Genetics and Human Mutation.

Teaching

The Department of Genetics undertakes the courses of Medical Genetics, including five-year clinical medicine, 5+3, Qilu medical class, international students, pharmacy school, dental school, and public health school. For the master's and doctoral students, "Human Molecular Genetics", "Medical Cytogenetics", "Methods for Identification and Statistical Analysis of Complex Disease" and "Genomics" have been opened, and "Experimental Genetics" courses have been offered for international students. In addition, undergraduate students also offer courses such as Human Genetics and Health, Immortal Gene. Among them, the course of "Medical Genetics" was rated as a quality course in Shandong Province.

Social service

The Department of Genetics is the chairman of the Medical Genetics Society of the Chinese Medical Association and the Shandong Provincial Medical Genetics and Eugenics Society. It trains hundreds of genetic counselors for various medical institutions and undertakes a large number of genetic counseling services.
