On August 22, the research team led by Professor Yi Fan from Shandong University published their latest research findings online in Cell Stem Cell, an international, authoritative academic journal. The paper is titled “Targeting ECM-Producing Cells with CAR-T Therapy Alleviates Kidney Fibrosis in Chronic Kidney Disease”. Focusing on the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM)—a fundamental characteristic of renal fibrosis—the study proposes for the first time a CAR-T cell therapy system targeting ECM-producing cell types. This system can alleviate multi-organ fibrosis, improve chronic kidney disease (CKD) caused by various etiologies and its complications, and also provide a new therapeutic paradigm for other fibrotic diseases. Dr. Zhao Songbai from the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University, Li Rongkun (a 2022-level doctoral student), and Dr. Xia Yuan from Qilu Hospital are co-first authors of the paper. Professors Yi Fan, Tang Wei, and Sun Jinpeng from the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University are co-corresponding authors. Shandong University is the sole first-author and corresponding-author institution.
