Professor Ma Chunhong/Liang Xiaohong’s Team and Professor Liu Hong’s Team Achieve New Progress in Enhancing NK Cell Immunotherapy via Nanomaterials
September 13, 2025

Recently, through interdisciplinary cooperation, the research teams led by Professors Ma Chunhong and Liang Xiaohong from the School of Basic Medical Sciences, and the interdisciplinary innovation team led by Professor Liu Hong from the State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, have developed a piezoelectric nanoparticle that can target and bind to the surface of natural killer (NK) cells. Driven by ultrasound, the nanoparticles generate mechanical signals and wirelessly controllable electrical signals on the NK cell surface, which precisely activate the effector functions of NK cells and enhance their anti-tumor capabilities. This provides an innovative approach for the adoptive transfer therapy of solid tumors using NK cells. Relevant findings, titled “Ultrasound-Activated Piezoelectric Nanoparticles Targeting and Activating NK Cells for Tumor Immunotherapy”, have been published in the international journal Advanced Materials (CAS Category 1 Top Journal, 5-Year Average IF: 28.9). Zhang Ruitong, a doctoral student from the interdisciplinary innovation team, is the first author of the paper, while Professors Liang Xiaohong and Liu Hong are the corresponding authors. The School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University, serves as the first corresponding author institution.
